“It was a very difficult decision, but I decided to simply play the odds.
With Tim Hudson, I know what I’m going to get… a sub 3.50 ERA, a solid WHIP, and a chance to win almost every night.
With Jay Bruce, any number of things can happen;
1) He is this year’s Ryan Braun, and I get ripped off
2) He has a decent/good year, in which case it was a good trade for me since I’m getting such a good pitcher in return.
3) He, like Rocco Baldelli, Jeremy Hermida, Alex Gordon, Justin Upton, and many other mega-hyped rookies, struggles in his rookie season. In this case, I dominate the trade.
So I figure there is a 20 - 40% chance he is every bit as good as he looks RIGHT NOW, and I get beat (but still have a great pitcher) and a 60 - 80% chance I come out on top here.
(Remember my league isn’t a keeper league… next season and the season after, Bruce will almost certainly be > then Hudson)”

“I love that deal because even though i think he is this year’s Ryan Braun and will mash for the rest of the season, I’d rather have the dominant pitcher.”

Duuuude, listen to yourself man. considering there are so many pitchers you can find available, not to mention spot start a pitcher here and there, you cant spot start a great hitter. Would you trade Braun for Hudson, i’d imagine no. Trading Jay Bruce is a big mistake.”

“UMMMMM ALL-HYPE MY ASS! JAY BRUCE REMINDS ME OF MATT HOLLIDAY CIRCA ‘07, ACTUALLY BETTER….”

“We will have to re-visit this at the end of the season, because only then will it become clear who got the better side.
Keep in mind though, if Bruce keeps this up and has Braun-like monster year, I’ll be the first to admit that he got the better end of the deal.
But like with any gamble, it is all about the odds you are getting. If somebody has a fair coin and is about to do a fair flip and says “I’ll give you $15 if it lands on heads, you give me $10 if it lands on tails”, you have to take it. If it lands on tails, so be it. You still made the right move.”
