My 2010 NFL Power Rankings Week 4

By Dave Consolazio, September 29, 2010 4:43 pm
Rank Up/Down Record Team
1 4 3-0 Pittsburgh – The plan was to stay afloat until Ben Roethlisberger got back. Instead, the Steelers dominate in his absence. The fact that this team will get better soon is scary.
2 1 2-1 Indianapolis – Worries about the defense after week one have settled down, looking like business as usual in Indy.
3 1 2-1 Green Bay – Complete meltdown of penalties, on the road against a strong division rival, and still only lose by three. Even at their worst, Green Bay can still top half of the league. But they shouldn’t get in the habit of playing at their worst.
4 3 2-1 New Orleans – Should be 3-0 after losing due to a chip-shot field goal attempt. Nothing wrong with losing to a great Atlanta team, but this Saints team hasn’t quite found their 2009 groove yet.
5 2 2-1 NY Jets - Forget the Baltimore game. Mark Sanchez looks great, and wins over New England and Miami show what the Jets are made of.
6 8 3-0 Chicago – Following up beating Dallas in Dallas with beating one of the league’s best (Green Bay) Monday night, it’s difficult to argue that Chicago isn’t a real threat in the NFC North.
7 3 2-1 Atlanta – Pittsburgh really was a brutal draw to start the season. This team is for real, and they’ve shown it since.
8 2 2-1 Baltimore – Not many style points for a close win over Cleveland, but wins are more important than style points. Maybe Anquan Boldin’s huge day will provide the spark this offense has been looking for.
9 - 2-1 New England – Giving up 30 points at home to Buffalo a week after giving up 28 to the Jets? We can’t pretend like the defense isn’t a concern.
10 6 2-1 Houston – They had to run out of steam sooner or later after two huge emotional wins. A very winnable game at Oakland should get them back on track.
11 3 2-1 Miami – Also had a nice bounce-back blowout.
12 - 2-1 Cincinnati – We STILL haven’t seen what this offense is capable of, but the defense looks top-notch.
13 7 3-0 Kansas City – I’m still not a full blown believer in this team, but their actions speak louder than my words.
14 1 2-1 Tennessee – Vince Young and Chris Johnson both have nice rebound games, and Tennessee looks great on the road in stomping a NY Giants team that really needed a win.
15 2 2-1 Philadelphia – Don’t deserve to fall two spots after their domination over Jacksonville, but KC and Tennessee earned the jumps. The Mike Vick experiment has been a rousing success so far, but it’s only Detroit and Jacksonville. Looking forward to seeing real tests.
16 3 1-2 Dallas – Finally, the Cowboys put it together and look like the contender they are supposed to be. They carry good feelings into the bye, but still need to make plenty of adjustments.
17 - 1-2 Minnesota – Took care of business against Detroit. Brutal schedule awaits them on the other side of the bye; they’d better find their 2009 form, and fast.
18 7 2-1 Seattle – If only they could play all 16 games at home. Leon Washington’s two-TD performance in the return game was spectacular.
19 8 1-2 San Diego – Just getting it out of their system, as they always do at the beginning of the season. Return of Marcus McNeill will do wonders.
20 4 1-2 Washington – The Redskins must have been looking ahead to the Donovan VS. Philadelphia game, too, because they forgot to show up against St. Louis.
21 3 1-2 NY Giants – Follow up a blowout loss to Indianapolis with a blowout loss to Tennessee. Can they avoid a blowout loss to Chicago?
22 - 2-1 Tampa Bay – Last weeks loss to Pittsburgh may have been a bit closer to this team’s true colors than their 2-0 record was.
23 4 2-1 Arizona – Couldn’t give the game away to Oakland, but they sure did try. Still looks to me like this team is in for a long season.
24 1 1-2 Denver – Not much a team like Denver is going to do against a team like Indianapolis. @Tennessee, @Baltimore, and NY Jets ahead could dig a deep hole.
25 5 1-2 St. Louis – Fought hard against Arizona and Oakland, and won handily against Washington. This is a team that is learning how to win.
26 - 1-2 Oakland – Unmissable field goal somehow missed to cost Oakland the game was heartbreaking, but they’d better stop feeling sorry for themselves in a hurry if they want to have a fighting chance against Houston this week.
27 6 0-3 San Francisco – Can’t keep making excuses for this team. They may find “it” as the season carries on, but they quite clearly don’t have “it” now.
28 4 1-2 Jacksonville – Hard to find any positives in last week’s blowout loss to Philadelphia. It will be hard to avoid another this week with Indianapolis coming to town.
29 3 0-3 Cleveland – As bad as Cleveland is (and they are bad), they haven’t lost any of their games by more than a touchdown. Sticking around is a good way to eventually steal one.
30 1 0-3 Buffalo – Played both Miami and New England tough. This is a really bad team, but to their defense, there are plenty of teams around the league that would start off 0-3 to Miami, @Green Bay, and @New England.
31 2 0-3 Detroit – The rest of the NFC North is just too far ahead right now, and another long season looks imminent.
32 4 0-3 Carolina – Three 13-point losses this season, they are the only team in the league that hasn’t even threatened to win a game. Worse yet, they’ve had two at home.

My 2010 College Football Top 25 Rankings Week 5

By Dave Consolazio, September 27, 2010 10:56 pm
Rank Up/Down Record Team
1 - 4-0 Alabama – Received a very real scare in Arkansas, but this is what the truly great teams do; find a way to win the tough games, too.
2 - 4-0 Ohio State – Offense is running like a well-oiled machine. First road game of the year coming up this week.
3 - 3-0 Boise State – Didn’t earn as many style points as they should have against Oregon State, but now they coast until that late season game in Nevada.
4 - 4-0 TCU – Looked a lot more vulnerable than we are used to seeing against SMU, but took care of business in the second half.
5 - 4-0 Oregon – A statistical and momentum-driven mess of a game, the most important thing for the Ducks is that they came out on top in another road test. This week’s game against Stanford could be for all the marbles in the Pac-10.
6 1 4-0 Nebraska – Offense took a game off against South Dakota State, but now the real fun begins, heading into Kansas State and hosting Texas in their next two games.
7 3 4-0 Florida – The Gators have improved every week, which is a great sign; but back-to-back games in Alabama and at home against LSU will define the season. Hats off to Trey Burton’s six touchdown performance.
8 6 4-0 Auburn – Topping a surging South Carolina team at home marked the second straight impressive home win for Auburn, who get a breather this week against ULM.
9 6 4-0 Stanford – The Cardinal aren’t just beating teams, they are steamrolling them. A win at Oregon would pave the way for a magical season.
10 2 4-0 Oklahoma – Scare in Cincinnati, but unlike Texas, their looking ahead to next week didn’t cost them the game. If they can get through Texas, the remaining schedule shapes up nicely.
11 1 4-0 Arizona – Not going to get any style points for this one, but doing just enough and narrowly avoiding the letdown shows a depth this Wildcats team hasn’t had in years past.
12 1 4-0 Utah – Another blowout win, not a whole lot more they can do but keep winning.
13 3 4-0 LSU – Another statement game for the defense; but the defense was never really in question. The offense will be the difference between a great season and a special one.
14 3 4-0 Wisconsin – Completely destroying Austin Peay in itself isn’t that impressive, but the fact that Wisconsin put together their first flawless start-to-finish effort of the season is.
15 6 3-1 Arkansas – Heartbreaking loss in a game Arkansas had within their grasp. It will be a long time before Ryan Mallett forgives himself for this one.
16 5 2-1 Miami – Going into Pittsburgh and thoroughly dominating is a pretty nice way to put the Ohio State game in the pass. Jacory Harris still needs to cut back on the mistakes for this team to reach the next level.
17 1 3-1 Iowa – Easy ones are out of the way; four game stretch of Penn State, @Michigan, Wisconsin, and Michigan State will go a long way in determining the Big 10’s pecking order.
18 7 3-1 South Carolina – Tough loss in Auburn, but the Gamecocks now have two whole weeks to gameplan for a home game against Alabama. Find a way to pull off that upset, and the Auburn loss is quickly forgiven.
19 - 4-0 Michigan – Easy win over Bowling Green; more importantly, Denard Robinson appears to be okay. Need to stay focused this week in Indiana and not look ahead to the looming Michigan State and Iowa games.
20 - 4-0 USC – As ugly as it has been, this is the first time the Trojans have started 4-0 since 2007… but it hasn’t exactly been against world beaters. They’ll get the chance to exact some revenge on the Washington team that upset them last season this week.
21 15 3-1 Texas – I predicted this team would be looking ahead to the Oklahoma game and not be at their best. What I didn’t predict was the Longhorns getting dominated on their home turf for four quarters by UCLA. Quick shot at redemption comes this week against the Sooners.
22 2 4-0 Nevada – BYU is having an off year, but Nevada still deserves credit for going on the road and taking care of business. They may not be in the same tier as Boise State, but the WAC isn’t a one-team conference.
23 - 4-0 North Carolina State – Not sure what’s wrong with Georgia Tech, but whatever it is, it doesn’t make NC State’s convincing road win over them any less impressive. Can they surprise again with a win over Virginia Tech this week?
24 1 3-1 Penn State – Like this team on paper, but we still haven’t learned anything about them in wins over Youngstown State, Kent State, and Temple. This week’s game at Iowa will tell us a lot.
25 - 4-0 Michigan State – Fifth straight home game of the season against Wisconsin this week gives the Spartans a chance to show they belong in the Top 25.

Dropped Out: West Virginia (#22)

10-5-1! (Yaaaaay!)

4-9-3. (Booooo!)

14-14-4! (…)

Nothing? Anyone? Pity clap?

I’m kind of like that creepy cousin you have (yes, you, don’t look around) that keeps digging holes and then filling them back up with the dirt he just dug up.

Then again, at least he’s getting some exercise and sunlight.

Heck, I mean I’d love to do a song and dance about how much I rule, but after week one’s disaster, that’s a bit tricky. I mean I lost a subscriber after week one!

Would he be willing to take me back if he knew how great I did last week? I just want to start with a clean slate. Isn’t that what a .500 record is? A blank canvas? An open field? A (generic thing which is blank)?

Oh, right, he can’t read this. It wasn’t sent to him. (Sigh…)

Well, thank the rest of you for sticking with me through thick and thin. My heart may be 1/372 parts broken, but I must press on! Let’s keep this winning streak alive!

My 2010 NFL Power Rankings Week 3

By Dave Consolazio, September 22, 2010 8:23 pm
Rank Up/Down Record Team
1 - 2-0 New Orleans – If they can get through Atlanta this week, schedule appears to be smooth sailing until Week 8 against Pittsburgh. Should be fine even without Reggie Bush.
2 - 2-0 Green Bay – One of the best passing attacks and defenses in the league, this will be a tough team to beat all year long.
3 1 1-1 Indianapolis – “Manning Bowl” turned out to be nothing more than target practice for Peyton.
4 6 2-0 Houston – Avoiding a letdown from the Indianapolis win by overcoming a 17-point second half deficit on the road? Yeah, I’d say this team is for real.
5 4 2-0 Pittsburgh - Quarterback woes are a lot harder to notice when the defense is forcing seven turnovers and shutting down the best running back in the game.
6 3 1-1 Baltimore – Cincinnati just seems to have this team’s number.
7 1 1-1 NY Jets – A complete 180 from the Baltimore game, the Jets looked great against New England. Not having Revis for the Miami game could be costly.
8 7 2-0 Miami – Two straight road wins, and the defense looks outstanding. So much for the AFC East being a two horse race between New York and New England.
9 4 1-1 New England – Tough loss last week considering all the bad blood with New York, but a freebie against Buffalo at home this week should get them back on track.
10 1 1-1 Atlanta – Nice bounce-back from a frustrating loss to Pittsburgh in week one in blowing out Arizona.
11 1 1-1 San Diego – Also had a nice bounce-back blowout.
12 4 1-1 Cincinnati – Even at home, beating Baltimore is no easy feat. We still haven’t seen this offense at its finest.
13 5 1-1 Philadelphia – Regardless of how you feel about Mike Vick off the field, it’s hard to deny that he still has a lot left on it.
14 6 2-0 Chicago – When Jay Cutler avoids shooting himself in the foot, this can actually be a very dangerous team.
15 2 1-1 Tennessee – Erased the good vibes from the Raiders game with seven turnovers against the Steelers. Vince Young’s benching sparks some questions.
16 1 1-1 Washington – Tough to cough up a 17-point lead, but they played a very good Houston team tough.
17 10 0-2 Minnesota – On the bright side, the defense looks good. But wow, this offense is really out of sync.
18 4 1-1 NY Giants – Picking up the win in Indianapolis wasn’t expected, but putting up a fight would have been nice.
19 13 0-2 Dallas – Miles Austin’s insane numbers may be helping fantasy teams nationwide, but they aren’t enough to prevent the Cowboys from falling to 0-2.
20 2 2-0 Kansas City – Did what they could to keep Cleveland in the game, but the Browns were happy to give it away.
21 2 0-2 San Francisco – Showed some fight against New Orleans, but they need real victories, not moral ones.
22 6 2-0 Tampa Bay – Cleveland and Carolina are far from the cream of the crop, but 2-0 is 2-0.
23 3 1-1 Denver – Comfortable win over Seattle gets the season back on track.
24 1 1-1 Jacksonville – Tough loss last week, but drawing San Diego coming off of a big MNF upset was a disaster waiting to happen for the Jags.
25 4 1-1 Seattle – Concerns that the San Francisco game was a fluke weren’t put to rest with this dud in Denver.
26 1 1-1 Oakland – Bruce Gradkowski breathed some life into the Raiders last week, and a winnable game at Arizona this week will give us a better idea of where this team stands.
27 - 1-1 Arizona – Flaws were magnified against a strong Atlanta team.
28 4 0-2 Carolina – Losing at home to Tampa Bay and making the quarterback switch to Jimmy Clausen, Carolina appears geared up for a long season.
29 - 0-2 Detroit – Once again showed a ton of fight against a good team last week, but wins will still be hard to come by.
30 1 0-2 St. Louis – Two losses against two bad teams, but the Rams haven’t looked hopeless like they have in years past.
31 1 0-2 Buffalo – Last week’s blowout loss likely the first of many for the Bills this season.
32 - 0-2 Cleveland – After dropping two games they could have won, a glance at the upcoming schedule suggests an 0-9 start is very likely.

My 2010 College Football Top 25 Rankings Week 4

By Dave Consolazio, September 21, 2010 5:07 am
Rank Up/Down Record Team
1 - 3-0 Alabama – 62-point effort in Duke just showing off dominance at this point. Can Arkansas provide a test?
2 - 3-0 Ohio State – Like Alabama, the Buckeyes also show no signs of slowing down.
3 - 2-0 Boise State – First of many blowout wins over inferior opponents this season; need style points badly in this week’s Oregon State game.
4 - 3-0 TCU – Baylor isn’t a total scrub, but TCU made them look like one. First road game of the season at SMU coming up, but shouldn’t be a problem.
5 - 3-0 Oregon – With 189 points scored in three games, the Ducks have more points than Miami (OH), Army, San Jose State, New Mexico State, and Washington State had in the entire 2009 season.
6 2 3-0 Texas – Heading into Texas Tech and picking up the win was huge. Must avoid a letdown against UCLA before the showdown against Oklahoma in two weeks.
7 2 3-0 Nebraska – Washington didn’t look like they belonged on the field. Defense forced Locker into the worst game of his collegiate career.
8 1 3-0 Oklahoma – Two of the three games so far this season have been closer than they should have, but they know how to close the deal.
9 2 3-0 Arkansas – Ryan Mallett was just as good on the road in Georgia as he was in his first two warm-up games. If anyone is going to get to Alabama’s defense, it’ll be him.
10 - 3-0 Florida – The Gators are starting to come around, but still don’t look like a team that can give Alabama much trouble in two weeks.
11 1 3-0 South Carolina – Slept through the Furman game on defense, but no worries there. The next two games (@Auburn and Alabama) show us if the Gamecocks really belong in the top tier.
12 7 3-0 Arizona – Letting Iowa back in the game wasn’t pretty, but having the composure to weather the storm was extremely impressive. The Wildcats will need that composure in conference play.
13 - 3-0 Utah – Beating up New Mexico just seems to be the “in” thing to do these days.
14 1 3-0 Auburn – Nice win to come back from down 17-3 against Clemson to pick up the win. South Carolina will provide a nice test this week.
15 1 3-0 Stanford – Looking extremely strong to kick off the season, the upcoming road trip to Notre Dame and Oregon will tell the story of the season. That Oregon game is setting up to be a barn-burner.
16 1 3-0 LSU – The UNC second half now a thing of the past, this LSU defense looks capable of keeping the Tigers in every game they play.
17 3 3-0 Wisconsin – Another ugly win, but like USC must be thinking, a win is a win. They have the talent to finish near the top of the Big Ten, but they’ll need a step forward.
18 12 2-1 Iowa – The Big Ten Title is still within reach, but the dream season came to an end last week. After taking all of the momentum with 20 unanswered points to tie the game, a truly elite team finds a way to close the deal.
19 1 3-0 Michigan – Not a pretty win to be pushed to the wire by an FCS team, but not folding under pressure like past Rodriguez teams might have done was a good sign.
20 1 3-0 USC – The Trojans continue to look like a bunch of talented players with no idea what they are doing instead of a cohesive unit. 3-0 is 3-0, but this team is still a ways away from being ready for the Pac-10’s elite.
21 1 2-0 Miami – Having last week off could prove to be valuable in game planning for a tough road game in Pittsburgh this week.
22 - 3-0 West Virginia – A win at LSU this week could spark a special season, but it certainly won’t come easy.
23 1 2-1 Penn State – Nice bounce-back shutout coming off of the frustrating Alabama game.
24 - 3-0 Nevada – The WAC gets written off as a one-team conference, but Nevada reminded the college football world that they aren’t so bad themselves with a blowout win over Cal.
25 - 3-0 Michigan State – Beautiful fake field goal in overtime over Notre Dame lands the Spartans a spot to round out the Top 25.

Dropped Out: Houston (#23), Cal (#25)

So you spend months leading up to the NFL season, tirelessly combing through hundreds of old blog posts, articles, videos, and podcasts, building an all encompassing website just in time for the 2010 football season. The stage is set for greatness. The great rise to the occasion.

Me? I trip over my own feet and face plant on the concrete.

Veteran readers of the Dime know how cranky I get when I have a disastrous week. Many-a-time I’ve whined about how unfair it is, planned my retirement, etc.

At 2-9-3 against the spread Sunday, I had all of that ready. The works. The type of self-depreciating humor that forgets the part where it’s supposed to be funny. Just a good old fashion I-suck-at-life fest.

Fortunately, Monday night was very kind to me, with both of my picks coming through, which DOUBLED my win total for the week. That made me happy and made me feel slightly (albeit very slightly) less useless.

So blame the Jets and the Chargers for depriving you of a full-on Dave-hate extravaganza. Instead, you just get this thinly veiled variety of self-loathing.

4-9-3. Way to raise the bar for yourself, slugger.

Can’t be much worse this week. Or can it? Here goes nothing.

My 2010 NFL Power Rankings Week 2

By Dave Consolazio, September 15, 2010 5:41 pm

Here is my first look at the 2010 NFL Power Rankings following the action of opening week. My perceptions of teams will change more drastically when more games are played; my rankings are still largely factoring in my observations from before the season started.

Rank Up/Down Record Team
1 - 1-0 New Orleans – Can’t even think about moving the defending champion Saints from the top spot until they lose. Great opener for the defense.
2 - 1-0 Green Bay – Picking up where they picked up last regular season with a nice win in Philadelphia. Good job holding off the momentum-riding Eagles and Mike Vick late.
3 - 1-0 Baltimore – The Jets’ offense is bad, but it isn’t THAT bad. Credit this defense, and the offense will have much better games ahead, too.
4 - 0-1 Indianapolis – I’m willing to excuse them for losing to a hungry division rival on the road in week one. Surrendering 231 rushing yards to Arian Foster isn’t quite as easy to excuse.
5 - 1-0 New England – After all the talk about Brady and Moss and Mankins contracts this offseason, it was business as usual on the field. One of the best home field advantages in the game.
6 - 0-1 Dallas – Too talented of a team to be held down for long; but speaking of holding, the offensive line is going to have to improve in a hurry.
7 - 0-1 Minnesota – Defense showed a lot in holding the Saints’ high powered offense to only 14 points, but the slew of wide receiver injuries was felt.
8 - 0-1 NY Jets – Preseason concerns about the offense were only made clearer in the season opener. Without a running game to go with it, the defense can only do so much.
9 - 1-0 Pittsburgh – All of the Ben Roethlisberger drama made some of us (myself included) forget how strong this defense is. It’s at another level when Polamalu is healthy.
10 - 1-0 Houston – After plenty of good efforts against the Colts over the last few years, the Texans finally put it all together and earned a win. We know the pass attack is great, but if they can rush too, look out.
11 - 0-1 Atlanta – Not a good start for what should be a promising Falcons team this season. @Pittsburgh is a tough draw in week one, but with Roethlisberger sidelined, a win would have been nice.
12 - 0-1 San Diego – Ugly start to the season, but what else is new; San Diego has started off 2-3 in each of the last three seasons.
13 - 1-0 Tennessee – Blowing out Oakland isn’t going to convince anyone you are a contender, but when Chris Johnson and Vince Young are clicking, this is a team that can compete with anyone.
14 - 1-0 NY Giants – The defense looked good, forcing five turnovers and allowing only 237 yards of total offense. But it’s only Carolina. Indianapolis this week will be much more interesting.
15 - 1-0 Miami – Some are criticizing Miami’s less-than-spectacular win over the Bills last week, but any time you can pick up a win on the road against a division rival, even a bad one, you’ll take it.
16 - 0-1 Cincinnati – Despite all the talent, the Bengals looked hopeless against the Patriots in the first half. Doesn’t get any easier this week against Baltimore.
17 - 1-0 Washington – Outstanding defensive effort to shut down a high-powered defense like Dallas’s, but offense is still a concern. Another high-powered offense on the way with Houston this week.
18 - 0-1 Philadelphia – Tough way to start the season, with Stewart Bradley and Kevin Kolb both out with concussions. On the bright side, Mike Vick looks like he has some good football left in him.
19 - 0-1 San Francisco – The odds-on favorite to win the NFC West were outclassed by Seattle, and are in serious danger of falling to 0-2 with New Orleans coming to town this week.
20 - 1-0 Chicago – Extremely ugly game for the Bears, but they were able to hold on for the win. Four turnovers won’t cut it most weeks, no matter how good the defense is.
21 - 1-0 Seattle – Pete Carroll’s team had every bit of the energy and excitement that his old team (USC) seems to be lacking this season. It’s only one game, but the optimism seems to be warranted.
22 - 1-0 Kansas City – Not only beat San Diego, but looked great doing it. Two winnable games ahead @Cleveland and San Francisco will show us what this team is made of.
23 - 1-0 Jacksonville – Solid effort against the Broncos to pick up the win, but still seem to be the odd team out in a brutal AFC South.
24 - 0-1 Carolina – If Carolina is going to win games, it’s going to be with defense and ball control, NOT giving up 31 points and coughing the ball up five times.
25 - 0-1 Oakland – Doesn’t really matter who is under center for Oakland if the offensive line can’t hold up. Must win this week at home against St. Louis if this season is going to be the step forward many were predicting for this season.
26 - 0-1 Denver – Not much to be excited about in Denver from the looks of things. 2-8 finish to last season was more realistic than 6-0 start.
27 - 1-0 Arizona – I might be being far too harsh on Arizona, but this team doesn’t look to be much better than this bottom tier to me this season. They have plenty of time to prove me wrong.
28 - 1-0 Tampa Bay – Nice to get a win, but it wasn’t easy, and it was probably one of the only teams they could get one against this season.
29 - 0-1 Detroit – Clearly a better team than they were last year, but with Matthew Stafford’s injury and the inability to put the game away late (controversial call or not), it may not translate to many more wins this season.
30 - 0-1 Buffalo – Respectable effort against Miami, but with a two-game road trip featuring Green Bay and New England ahead, an 0-3 hole seems unavoidable.
31 - 0-1 St. Louis – Sam Bradford’s 55-throw effort last week had St. Louis in the game right down to the end. He’ll get his first taste of NFL football on the road in the Black Hole of Oakland this Sunday.
32 - 0-1 Cleveland – Couldn’t hold on to a 14-3 lead against one of the worst teams in the league; not exactly a confidence booster.
