Rank Up/Down Record Team
1 1 6-0 Ohio State – If they didn’t control their own destiny before, they almost certainly do now. At Wisconsin this week one of the few remaining road blocks on the schedule.
2 1 5-0 Boise State – Keep winning, and keep winning big. Oregon State’s win at Arizona helps their stock, too.
3 1 6-0 Oregon – As far as style points go, win over Washington State wasn’t all that pretty. Nice time for a weekend off to get healthy, still some tricky road games ahead.
4 1 6-0 TCU – Two straight shutouts, the Horned Frogs are doing all that they can to stay in the discussion.
5 2 5-0 Oklahoma – Iowa State shouldn’t be a problem at home this week as long as they aren’t looking ahead to their road trip to Missouri in two weeks.
6 6-0 Auburn – Now the real fun begins with home games against Arkansas and LSU. The SEC is about to sort itself out, and Auburn has home field advantage.
7 1 5-0 Nebraska – Left no doubt against Kansas State last week. Tough three game stretch vs Texas, at Oklahoma St, and vs Missouri, but if they continue to play at this level, they can handle it.
8 7 5-1 Alabama – Beaten somewhat soundly by South Carolina, how will Alabama bounce back with their aura of invincibility no longer intact?
9 2 6-0 LSU – Unbelievable the ways that LSU keeps finding to win, but an undefeated record in the SEC requires zero style points to impress. Easy one against McNeese State, and then off to try and work the magic at Auburn.
10 5-0 Utah – Offense is steamrolling over opponents, dropping 56+ points (68) for the third straight week last week.
11 8 4-1 South Carolina – Beating the best team in the country convincingly is one way to boost your stock as a program. Need to watch out for the letdown game at Kentucky, who just gave Auburn a close game last week.
12 5 6-0 Michigan State – Convincing win at Michigan, this team looks great on both sides of the ball. Home game against Illinois before a tough road trip to Northwestern and Iowa.
13 1 4-1 Arkansas – Great win over a dangerous Texas A&M team. A win at Auburn this week would put the Alabama loss in the rear-view mirror.
14 5-1 Stanford – Defense is clearly a concern for the Cardinal, but avoiding the second straight loss was huge. They’ll have a bye week to work on it.
15 1 4-1 Iowa – Had the bye week (and the Michigan State game as a blueprint) to figure out how to stop Denard Robinson this week at Michigan. Tough three game stretch (at Michigan, Wisconsin, Michigan State) ahead.
16 8 5-1 Florida State – Absolutely crushed Miami in Miami, Florida State is looking like the class of the ACC. Should be another win this week against Boston College.
17 8 4-1 Arizona – Close games finally caught up to the Wildcats with a home loss to Oregon State. Can’t sleep on Washington State this week, who all of a sudden are playing with some confidence.
18 2 6-0 Nevada – As long as they don’t vacation too hard in Hawaii, Nevada should improve to 7-0 this week.
19 3 5-0 Oklahoma State – With the way this offense is clicking, this could be the team that trips up Nebraska or Oklahoma down the road.
20 1 5-1 Wisconsin – Will need to take their game to a level we haven’t seen from them yet this season to upset Ohio State.
21 4 5-0 Missouri – Spot in the Top 25 on very thin ice with next three games at Texas A&M, vs. Oklahoma, at Nebraska.
22 5-1 Air Force – After San Diego State this week, they go to TCU and then get Utah at home, which should be a fun pair of games to watch.
23 5 5-1 Michigan – Loss at home to rival Michigan State was tough, but very quick chance for redemption this week against Iowa.
24 9 4-2 Florida – Alabama and LSU are great teams, but a program like Florida isn’t used to having excuses made for them. Losing at home was particularly stinging.
25 3-2 Oregon State – Big win over Arizona, and only two losses came on the road against Top 5 teams. Likely won’t be their last upset in the Pac-10 this year.

Dropped Out: Miami (#13), Northwestern (#23)

  1. David says:

Is it possible that at the end of the season we might have a BSU TCU matchup for the national championship?

If everyone in front and below them loses twice this year?

    Thanks,

    David.

  2. Of course anything is possible, albeit highly unlikely. It would probably take about the scenario you just wrote out. Boise State likely gets in if everyone but them loses, but I’d say a one-loss SEC Champion almost certainly gets in over unbeaten TCU, and a one-loss Big-12 champion or Pac-10 team likely makes a strong case, too. Should be fun, Bama’s loss opens up some possibilities that’s for sure!
